Awards for Excellence 2017
The MPA Awards for Excellence took place on Friday 24 March. Thanks to all who nominated and attended the awards. And a big thank you to all our sponsors for their support, including C-Bus, Busy at Work, MGA Insurance, Construction Training Centre and Print Plus. Without the generous support of these sponsors, the awards would simply not be possible. I’d also like to thank the businesses that supplied the door prizes, including McKays Solicitors, Paint Back, Red Energy and Brisbane Access; thank you again for the great prizes.
A big thank you to Brian Simpson for acting as our MC. Brian was enlisted at the last minute when our original MC could not make it—thanks Brian. I would also like to thank the judges who volunteered their time, as well as Wayne our photographer for giving up his time; from what I have seen, Wayne has done a great job. MPA staff members must also be mentioned for their efforts in putting the awards together over the last six months; well done everybody. We will be working hard to ensure a bigger and better awards night for 2018.
MPA does not run the Awards for Excellence to make money. The Awards are purely an opportunity to showcase the outstanding work that is being carried out in Queensland, and there was plenty evidence of this work on the night. The Awards are also a way to encourage everyone operating in Australia’s painting and decorating industry, and to give a few ‘pats on the back’ along the way. To see the young Apprentices and Indigenous Painters being rewarded for their good work made all the hard work all worth it—that’s what the night is all about for me.
The Queensland Building Plan road show has also been a great success this month. MPA has been represented at all the consultation sessions around the state. I attended the Ipswich Queensland Building Plan and raised concerns that members have with the home warranty scheme, as well as raising the threshold of the licensing to $5,000 which is likely to attract more unqualified people into the industry. MPA also received feedback from one of the Ministers representative, which indicated that they will be looking very closely at the feedback and ideas from painters and decorators. I have requested another meeting with the Ministers’ office to discuss the concerns of MPA members.
MPA and C-Bus will be hosting a breakfast next month at the Broncos Leagues Club. Industry topics will be discussed, with leading industry experts and government officials present. This will be a great way to network and get the heads up on what is going on in the industry. Invites with all the details will be emailed to all members soon.
